Analysts give mixed feedback on Government’s performance

The Government under Robert Fico hasn't done much for the development of the country in the past three years it's been in power, although political stability and compliance with the budgetary discipline can be listed among the positives, political analyst Jan Baránek told the TASR press agency. He doesn't like the fact that measures have been passed which are not in favour of the middle class. "A more pronounced revision of the Election Act is still lacking: we still have only a single national constituency. The Government has also bolstered the role of the state in areas where it shouldn't have, and thus restricts the freedom and independence of businesses", said Baránek, who also feels that a greater effort in the fight against corruption is lacking. "Not a single politician has ever been convicted for corruption, which would indicate that corruption doesn't exist, even though there have been plenty of scandals to prove otherwise. The support for families and the demographic rate has not met with success either and this can cause significant problems in the future".

Political analyst Michal Horsky compared the three years of Fico's Cabinet with the previous government of Iveta Radičová (2010-2012). "The Government of Robert Fico unequivocally dominates in terms of stability. Without coalition pressures, the Cabinet was allowed to present the results of its work peacefully. The weak points of this Cabinet are, however, that when taking into account the options it had, it could have acted in a more reformist fashion", he claimed. Comparing the current and the past governments in terms of foreign affairs policy, "both cabinets fared well and met our commitments", according to Horsky, a former Czechoslovak federal MP and a leading figure in the VPN (Public Against Violence) movement that formed Slovakia's first government in 1990. He doesn't like Fico's attacks against the centre-right, however. "Instead of engaging in political analyses and issuing warnings of hodge-podge coalitions, we should have focused more on matter-of-fact and binding promises of his future steps".
