Despite painting a permanently rosy picture through a state-controlled media, the formerly Communist regime of Czechoslovakia left its fair share of dirty secrets behind. One of them was a disused stone quarry in a Bratislava suburb which was chosen as the ideal location for the dumping of thousands of tonnes of toxic waste. What wasn't considered at the time however, was that the toxic substance could remain active, and could very easily enter underground fresh water supplies.
