Robots don't come cheap. For example, the humanoid ASIMO robot from Honda has so far cost more than 25 billion yen (€169 million) in development. Additionally, robots are built to perform different tasks, meaning different parts to be engineered for each application. Then of course a programming language is required for the robot to operate. Now imagine having an off-the-shelf robotic kit for the price of a new mobile phone, which accepts snap-on appendages for different tasks, and comes with its own open-source programming language? This is what the Slovak-built AnimaKit hopes to deliver, with the team of researchers and students behind the project preparing to crowd-fund their idea into reality. Gavin Shoebridge reports.
