Only a third of active political parties to take part in elections

Slovakia has 68 active political parties and only about a third of them are to take part in the upcoming March 5 general elections on their own or as part of a coalition, according to the Interior Ministry. In total, Slovakia has 155 registered political parties but most of them are in liquidation. Since the end of the one-party only communist regime about 95 political parties and movements have disappeared from the Slovak political scene. Others, however, have been created; the youngest one being Šanca and Skok which were registered last year. At least 10,000 signatures of supporters are required to apply for registration and there are a few movements who have been trying to do just that but have not always been successful. The most recent example is SEN who was refused the registration for allegedly providing false details of its supporters.
