Anti-immigration protest took place in Trnava

Around 200 people gathered in Trnava on Tuesday for an anti-immigration protest organised by Banská Bystrica region Governor Marian Kotleba's People's Party-Our Slovakia. Kotleba himself was not present, as he was being interviewed by police concerning an unspecified issue at the time of the demonstration. Party regional chairman from the Trenčín region Marcel Urban believes that by calling Kotleba during the planned protest, the police wanted to thwart his presence at the event. Meanwhile, MP for the governing Smer-SD Renáta Zmajkovičová also appeared at the protest in Trnava. She received quite a torrent of critical words against the Government. "I don't agree with this gathering - it's knocking on an open door. The decision has already been made and it has been presented by Prime Minister Robert Fico, who has stated that he rejects immigration quotas. I'm here as an MP and also as a citizen, who's somehow puzzled about what's going on. I believe that we should primarily help our own people. I also came here to ask whether conflict and aggression can help us", said Zmajkovičová, a former vice-chair of parliament. The event took around an hour, with quite a few of its participants then setting out for a protest motorcycle ride to Gabčíkovo (Trnava region), where 500 asylum seekers from Austria should be temporarily placed despite the disagreement of the locals. As many as 97 percent of those who took part in the local referendum last month disagreed with sheltering the immigrants in their village. It was reported earlier that members of Hungarian nationalist Sixty-Four Counties Youth Movement were also supposed to take part in the subsequent protest in Gabčíkovo on Saturday.
