Gabčíkovo referendum: 96.67 percent vote against refugee camp

As many as 96.67 percent of people from Gabčíkovo (Trnava region) in a referendum on Sunday voiced their disagreement with placing migrants seeking asylum in Austria into a Slovak Technical University dormitory facility in the village. 2,603 voters (58.46 percent) took part in the referendum. The turnout was somewhat lower than the number of people (3,148) who in a petition had urged the local authority to announce the referendum. Michaela Paulenova from the Interior Ministry's press department earlier this week stated that the referendum is of legal relevance only for the municipality. "The Interior Ministry as a state authority is not bound by the results of such a referendum and is not required by law to act accordingly," stressed Paulenova.
