Environment Ministry stops geological survey at Jahodna

Uranium surveying at Jahodná (near Košice) is over, the Environment Ministry didn't extend the permit for Ludovika Energy (subsidiary of European Uranium Resources, which is Canadian-Australian) for prospecting uranium and other ores in the area. Environment Minister Peter Žiga reported on Thursday that he has rejected the extension application. According to him, the prospecting window terminates on Monday (20 April) and all geological work, surveying and exploratory drilling has to finish. "This decision ends a period of traumatisation for Slovakia, residents of Košice and nearby municipalities lasting a decade," said Žiga. The ministry had already rejected the extension in February, after which the company called for a referral, so the ministry now decided in a second stage proceeding. The company has invested more than €22.45 million in the Jahodná survey.
