Bratislava and the Second World War

Bratislava and the Second World War

70 years ago, the Second World War came to an end. It was a war that affected almost every country on earth, leaving scars which remain to this day. In 1939 Czechoslovakia was split in two by Adolf Hitler, with Slovaks being given their own state. Broadcasts at the time reported it as a great thing for Slovaks, however the war which followed soon after was anything but. In this next four-part series Gavin Shoebridge focuses on the capital city of Bratislava, speaking to residents who lived here through the war to hear their stories, about Jews being deported, about surviving the bombing raids, and the fear of advancing Soviet troops.
