Healthcare can’t afford to ignore data

Patients and healthcare personnel in Slovakia should have begun having online access to medical records 4 years and three months ago. This is when the so called ehealth system was supposed to be fully operational. But inspite of the €61.98 million which have already been invested in the project from both the state budget, health insurance companies' contribution and funds from the European Union, ehealth is still just a dream. Even worse the Slovak Supreme Audit Office discovered that its project leaders broke the law on public procurement, accounting norms and the Civil Code. While ehealth has been grinding to a halt in Slovakia, those interested in dreaming of a better world could see how digitalization helps hospitals function more efficiently in other countries at a conference held last week in Bratislava. Anca Dragu spoke to Mike Denis, the Director of Information Strategy at Oxford Academic Health Science Network, a strong believer in the power of data in healthcare.
